Shampoo & Booze 53: Renovation 100% Done! Now time to make money.

We finished the renovation. Pop the champagne (or apple cider)! Check it out. We even have a bunch of bookings already. Feels great! See below for some before and after photos. Wow, what a job that was.

We are currently traveling for 30 days in Scandinavia before a video job in Vienna. We have been able to find a couple great people in our area to clean our rental while we're gone. We simply plug in a new Data SIM (Cell Hire has worked in every country we've been in, it's great) and communicate with any guests and our cleaners. This is the dream. Hope we can maintain it with a second rental.

Our farmhouse rental has been doing great as well. We recently changed out the washer when it broke to a compact apartment sized one by Magic Chef (it holds a lot more than it seems) and we absolutely love it! We also added an Amplifi Wifi Mesh network to have the best connectivity possible. It's pricey on Amazon, but you can find a deal if you keep an eye out on eBay.

We want to know what you want to hear from this podcast if we continue making it. We took a long break doing updates while we finished the house and wanted to do an update. Is this still interesting to you? Hope your rentals are rockin!

  1. Perfect, it is absolutely wonderful and anyone should be able to tell the care and love that went into the renovation. I enjoy the blog because I am in the middle of a reluctant renovation and need all the inspiration I can get. Also, you KNOW you will be doing another one!! You are just too good at this. Have a great trip.

  2. The before and after photos are amazing. I can't believe the amount of time you spent on all the details and the number of miles driven to get the wood for the floors. I love the built in bunkbeds. I am very happy to see the dishwasher in the kitchen!

How did you get the aerial shots of the house?

My month long summer renters just bought their own condo in the same building as mine, so they won't be renting from me next summer.

  3. I would love to hear about the ins and outs of the renovation itself, like why you overhauled it the way you did, how you kept costs down, etc. So much about having a rental is that the property almost always need to be overhauled before it can be rented successfully.

  5. I've always followed your Shampoo and Booze podcasts. I was going through withdrawl during the dry spell! So happy to see you are back so keep them coming. They have always been fun. Love the before and after pics. It's gone drone so dark and dank to sunny and fresh. It looks fabulous and love the hint that another is already in the works. Mums the word! ;-) Last but not least I thought I would toss out feedback if your interested. If not, I totally get it! Two things caught my eye while I was looking at the pics. The picture over the mantle and the way my eye is drawn to the area below the kitchen sink. To me it just looks really messy while everything else looks like a House Beautiful magazine spread. The other thing that caught my eye was the picture over the mantle. It just looks like "one of these things is not like the other". A bit out of place. The stark brightness and primary colors against the rustic stone fireplace doesn't seem to gel.
The kitchen sink I could see a cool, simple rolling L-shaped platform with a cabinet handle, that would roll under the pipes but also have space at the front for the bucket of cleaning supplies to sit out of sight. It would also hide the conglomeration of piping running underneath it.

Hope I didn't sound like a Negative Nellie! Have a ball on your vacation! ;-)

    1. no problem, we love feedback. yes the kitchen sink area definitely looks raw, we're trying to remedy that a little (also someone used the dish towel moments before the photo was snapped, i won't name names). though it is what it is- a commercial stainless sink with exposed pipes.

as for the mantle/stone area. we liked the bright on the dark. just our design opinion. we tried about 4 different art pieces (light and dark and a mirror) there and this one worked for us. great thing about art is that it can get changed at a moments notice when you change your mind (or it sells on ebay).

  6. It looks amazing! I love all the wood trim, doors, floors, and shelves. The bunks are too cool. I'd love to stay there! Please keep documenting your renovation and Airbnb experiences if you have time. As a host and amateur renovator in San Francisco, your experience is so interesting to me.

    2. My current Airbnb (going on 1 year) is in my house in the Excelsior, but close enough to Glen Park BART to get around without a car. The year before we had an Airbnb in Bayview, which was not an ideal location for tourists even though we loved it as residents. We're exploring getting a cabin in the redwoods, either Russian River or north of Santa Cruz, that we could manage as a vacation rental. We can't afford anything as nice as yours because of the insane real estate market, but tiny and cute is the goal.

    3. we used to live in excelsior, Edinburgh and Russia. i bet you're always booked!!

    4. That's really close to my house! We stay booked all year, but so was my Bayview place even though I practically tried to talk people out of staying with us. I think Airbnb is so popular in SF because the hotels are insanely expensive.

    5. yeah i wish we could have stayed, but we really wanted to buy and just couldn't (or didn't want to afford it) i really love SF, it's a great city. glad to hear you're doing well there. that's exciting.

  10. I didn't see the potential in this house when you first showed us pictures. Great job in seeing it and bringing it to life.

  11. I'm always loved the interviews with other hosts. I think it's interesting to hear what other owners are doing. That's what I would like to hear on the podcast.
VRBO has completely changed their system so that all communication must be done through vrbo. I no longer receive the person's email and phone number until after the person has booked.

  12. I love how the house turned out. And I love where you are today. Coming from doing everything yourselves, to now being able to travel and still make money. You guys are an inspiration!!! Love the photos. The one of the balcony is amazing. Looks so exotic. Congrats. And keep doing the podcast...it doesn't have to be as often as before or SL, but perhaps when you have something to share. :)

  14. You two have inspired us to sell on ebay, and now, due to your influence, we've bought a vintage Airstream trailer and are renovating it for Airbnb. We're spending so much money that it's scary. I keep second guessing our decisions. Lots of nail biting going on here. Will it be a success, or a complete failure? Yikes! Your new place looks ab fab. You've really done a 180 on that property.

  16. Hello-

I found your Scavenger Life podcast a few months ago and listen daily. You’ve inspired me to pursue an Airbnb investment (still in the saving process). I hope you’ll do more podcasts. I would interact more, however, reselling with a 1 & 4 year old leaves me little computer time.

    Thanks guys.

    Kara
