Time to take a taste of our own medicine and critique Ryanne's newest Airbnb! Lots of little tweaks have already happened since this video was made, but more to come. Check out the Kikkerland first aid kits, and the very handy USB charging station that all your guests will want and love you for.
Thanks to Beth for sending us her cabin on Lake Dora, MN, a property she co-owns with family members. Lots of inherited furniture, art and wood paneling presented a challenge for our design skills and 'work with what you have' mentality. We think Beth can continue to create a stellar stay for her guests (she is a Superhost, so no biggie there) with a few tweaks and some long term design eventualities.
Big thanks to Linda of The Coconut Casita for sending in her Airbnb for a look-see on video! We should all take note of her awesome Airbnb interior design and staging and social media skills!
This episode we chose a WINNER for our Design Advice Giveaway (Jordan!) and recorded a Two Part Video giving him advice for his fabulous Airbnb in upstate New York. Check out his airbnb HERE.
We cover ideas for each room and below are links to all of the items we suggested in Part One for his spaces. We always encourage second-hand and low-cost solutions for brightening and updating your short-term rentals. For clients we put together ideas to purchase or look for in your buying/hunting, and this gives you an idea of how that might work. See our Advice Services HERE.

One of our favorite pieces of furniture in our farmhouse rental is the Ikea Fabrikor metal and glass cabinet. It's the perfect solution to the antique house problem of having no closets. We store bath and beach towels in ours. However, Ikea seems to think having only a lock and key to open and close the door is a great idea. It's not, it's horribly bad design. As you can see in the video, our lock mechanism has simply snapped in half from normal use. This is the third time it's broken, so rather than try to repair the lock and key, I decided it was time to "Ikea Hack" the door to make it more stable and usable for our guests well into the future. Enjoy!
Have you had to hack a piece of furniture etc to work in your rental? We'd love to hear about it in the comments!

We're into our second week of renovating our second rental AKA the River House. The video and photos below show how we're gutting the house and adding on an additional room. We're uncovering everything to make sure we fix any issues and do it right the first time. The job will last at least twelve more weeks (maybe longer!?)
This is our third house that we've fully renovated, so we're not
amateurs. But it doesn't make it any less stressful. Handfuls of money
are flying out the door each day. Even if when we plan all the details,
some things remain out of our control. The good news? We know that this
project will end, the house will be awesome, and we'll make money from
it for years to come. It's that gap between now and then that's painful.
Some people invest in 401k's. We invest in rental property.
We'd love to hear other people's stories on renovations. Was it worth it?

After many months of construction and lots of crazy weather delays, the driveway is done. It feels glorious and triumphant to be able to drive up directly to the house, rather than climb 40 stairs to get there. We are so excited, we had to make a video to show it off!
